They say there's nothing stronger than a sister's bond. And that couldn't be more true than in the case of the O'Brien sisters: bonded by blood, beauty and most recently ... the battle of their lives. All positive for the BRCA 2 gene, which gives one an 87 percent chance of developing cancer in their lifetime--in the O'Brien sister's case, it was 100 percent.
Kathleen, a former professional athlete; Brenda, a professional actress; and Angel, a professional singer, the O'Brien's are a uniquely gifted and talented family, whom up until a year ago, seemed to have life by the tail. That was until the ugly, insipid disease known as breast cancer came crashing into their lives with reckless abandon.
In the last year, Kathleen "Sunshine", Brenda and Angel O'Brien have all been diagnosed with breast cancer and have all undergone surgery and are in various stages of treatment at this point.
Brenda, an actress and makeup artist for Disney's the Lion King, was the first to be diagnosed with breast cancer; Brenda had surgery in Dec 2010 in Las Vegas.
Six months later, shortly after she had taken to the stage to perform for her sister's benefit, Angel became very ill. ... A few days following the benefit, Angel went to see her physician where she was delivered the awful news that, like her sister, she too had breast cancer.
Kathleen, the eldest of the O'Brien sisters was now being pressured by the younger O'Brien sisters to get a full check up. In late October, Kathleen got her physical and was subsequently diagnosed with breast cancer. Kathleen, who had taken care of her younger sisters through their battle, had a double mastectomy in December ... following in her two younger sisters and their Mother's battle with the evil disease.
And while this wretched disease may have left its scar on each of O'Brien sisters, like it does to more than 225,000 women in the U.S. each year, they refuse to let it shake their spirit as seen in Angel's chemo dance videos http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OQUhlycMIA8. "You have to go through the process--from beginning to end--one step at a time, with positivity and a bit of humor." The O'Brien's are an inspiration to every woman--battling breast cancer or not. They are the epitome of courage, strength and grace.
If you are, or you know someone who is, battling this disease, we hope that the O'Brien's story will help inspire and encourage you to be a survivor--in body, mind and spirit.
